2019 Alumni Outing Announcement
Greetings to our Troop 11 current and former Scouts, adult leaders, parents and siblings!
Our annual “Alumni Hike” is a Troop 11 tradition.  Since 2011, Troop 11 has gone backpacking during Christmas break.  Current and former Troop 11 Scouts, adult leaders, parents, siblings and Scouts from other East Cooper troops have participated in these great outings, and it has been the highlight of the year for some.  This is the kind of outings participants talk about for years.
We have a great section of the AT lined-up for this year's hike.  Two days of hiking along a Tennessee Cherokee National Forest section, with a great hostel our first night and a classic AT shelter our second night.
While not a beginner-level outing, this trek should be fine for anyone 13+ with the proper gear (see below) and positive attitude!  Join the troop on this outing to catch view after view and engage in some peaceful fellowship during the busy holiday season, not to mention it being a great time to put those just-received hiking & camping presents to work!
WHAT:  Alumni Outing 2019
WHEN:  Fri Dec 27-Sun Dec 29, 2019
WHO:  All current & former Troop 11 Scouts, adult leaders, parents, and siblings
WHERE:  Along a wonderful 14-mile section of the AT in Tennessee, the section immediately north of the 15-mile trek we completed in the 2018 Alumni Hike.  We’ll spend our night of arrival in a hostel, and our night on the trail at the Mountaineer Falls shelter.
COST:  $60 (for transportation, shuttle and a bed with linens, shower and towel at the bunkhouse).  In addition, you will bring backpacking food for 1 breakfast, 2 lunches, and 1 supper.  Bring $25 for two meals on the road (Dec 27 supper and Dec 28 breakfast) and any snacks.
RSVP:  You must RSVP and pay $60 by 5 pm on Monday, Dec 16!  Due to the need to secure shuttles and reserve bunks at the hostel, we must have your RSVP and payment of $60 via PayPal by this deadline.

DETAILS:
Itinerary:
Friday Dec 27:  Depart Mt. Pleasant at 2 pm.  Spend our first night at Doe River Hiker Hostel Bunkhouse in Roan Mountain, TN https://doeriverhikerrest.com/bunkhouse .  We'll stop at a restaurant for supper on our way to the hostel.
Saturday Dec 28:  Eat an incredible breakfast at Smoky Mountain Bakers in Roan Mountain www.smokymountainbakers.com, then drive a few miles to the point where Howard Harrison Road crosses the AT, where we’ll leave our vehicles and get on the trail around 10 am.  Spend our night on the trail at The Mountaineer Falls shelter (a 5-mile day).
Sunday Dec 29:  This is our second and final day on the trail (a 9-mile day).  Cook breakfast at the shelter, hike out to the hostel at U.S. 19E, and the drivers will be shuttled back to their vehicles.  We'll return to Mount Pleasant very late in the evening.
Map:  Go to https://appalachiantrail.org/home/explore-the-trail#map , click on "Launch the Interactive Map" and locate the section we're hiking by searching on "Roan Mountain" and zooming-out.  We're hiking the trail to the Northeast of Roan Mountain (starting East of White Rocks mountain).
Personal Gear:  The challenges - and potential surprises - winter hiking can present are many.  Required clothing:  Layers - outer shell (waterproof) + insulating layer + base layer.  Warm hat.  Warm gloves.  Two pairs of wool or synthetic trekking socks and two pairs of liners.  Cotton Kills (do not bring anything - anything - cotton on the trail).  Tenting - bring one, or bring one to share.  While we expect up to 10 may be in the shelter, it's drafty.  It will keep out most snow and rain, but we may need tents to sleep comfortably.   Please refer to our Troop gear list & packing guide - don't rely on memory:  https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwoBr1_qhE-1V2JJSkdBM19YTDA
Shared Gear:  The shared gear (provided) will be 3 stoves, fuel, 3 large pots for boiling water & cleaning, 2 water filters, first aid kit, dish cleaning soap & sponges.
Trail Food:  Bring your own trail grub - 2 lunches (Sat & Sun), 1 dinner (Sat) and 1 breakfast (Sun).  We'll boil water for dehydrated meals and hot drinks (instant hot cacao, tea bags and instant coffee are great things) for each of these meals.  Lunch is often best if it's a "grazing" approach with several snacking stops during the day.  Dehydrated food is available locally at WalMart, Dicks, Half Moon, Sewee Outpost and all across the internet.  Grocery stores have trail mix, jerky, dried fruit and lots of other light options.  Might want to include some high-energy treats such as chocolate, nuts, peanut butter and the like.  Be creative!  Remember to minimize cleaning needs (most folks eat the dehydrated meals out of the bag itself).
Restaurant Food:  Bring money ($25 suggested) for Fri supper, Sat breakfast and snack on the Sunday evening drive home.  We'll choose a supper spot on the way, and Sat 8am breakfast will be at Smoky Mountain Bakers.
Uniform:  Given the logistics of this outing, there's no need to wear your Scout uniform.
